Fairs and markets
|
St Michael's Fair Founded in 1806, this fair is the oldest event in Louviers. Previously a cattle fair, it is now a modern fair which includes an exhibition, a fun fair and second-hand goods stalls. Initially the fair was held on the Square Albert 1er, but subsequently moved to Place du Champs de Ville and finally spread along the boulevards and all the town centre. The date of the fair is that of the feast day of Saint Michel : originally, 29th September was the last day of the important agricultural work, when the manorial rents were paid and the agricultural workers contracts ended (sources : SED, Bernard Bodinier). Nowadays St Michael's Fair takes place on the last weekend in September, for three days.
